American History & Geography
The study of American History begins in K-2 with a brief overview of major events and figures, from the earliest days to recent times. A more in-depth, chronological study begins in the 3rd grade and continues through the 8th grade.
- Geography: Name and locate town, city or community, state in which we live.
Locate North America, the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
- Native American Peoples, Past and Present: Become familiar with people and way of life of one Native American Tribe or Nation.
- Early Exploration and Settlement: The Voyage of Columbus, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella; The Nina, The Pinta, The Santa Maria; Columbus mistaken identifications of "Indies" and Indians"; The idea of what was for Europeans a 'New World'
- The Pilgrims: The Mayflower, Plymouth Rock; Thanksgiving Day Celebration July 4th, 'Independence Day': The birthday of our nation; Democracy (rule of the people), Americans wanted to govern themselves instead of a faraway king; Slavery in early America
- Presidents, Past and Present Presidents: George Washington, The Father of his Country, The legend of the Cherry Tree; Thomas Jefferson, author of the declaration of Independence; Abraham Lincoln, "Honest Abe', Theodore Roosevelt, Current US President
- Symbols and Figures: Recognize and become familiar with; the American flag, Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, The White House
